Cosa significa essere consulente per il Far East Film Festival?

A questa domanda ha risposto Paolo Bertolin, già consulente per la Mostra del Cinema di Venezia e da un paio d’anni anche per il FEFF. Secondo lui fare il consulente significa viaggiare e vivere nei Paesi d’interesse – nel suo caso Vietnam, Indonesia e Malesia – cercando di visionare il maggior numero di film possibili che corrispondano alla linea del FEFF (categoria dei film popolari). Una volta trovati i titoli il consulente li segnala allo staff del CEC che provvede ad un’ulteriore scrematura e decide quali e quanti film parteciperanno al festival.

Di solito le pellicole che vengono segnalate non sono quelle che hanno sbancato il botteghino, ma quelle che hanno introdotto un cambiamento di tendenza o lanciato un autore o una stella in particolare. Una volta visionati e selezionati i titoli, il consulente contatta gli autori e la casa di produzione in modo da riuscire a portare il film in questione a Udine.

Com’è visto il Far East Film Festival in Asia?

Sempre secondo Bertolin, nel corso degli anni il FEFF si è costruito una credibilità notevole in Asia e gli autori fanno a gara per poter portare i loro film al festival. Tutto questo perché il FEFF risulta essere ad oggi uno degli eventi meglio organizzati in quanto curato sotto tutti gli aspetti. Inoltre, il pubblico è particolarmente attento, numeroso e caloroso, cosa che aggrada gli ospiti asiatici.

Paolo Bertolin, previously consultant for the Venice Film Festival and working for FEFF for the last two years, answers this question: in his opinion, being a consultant means travelling to and living in the country concerned - in his case, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia - to watch as many films that correspond to the requirements of FEFF (popular films) as possible. Once the consultant identifies the appropriate titles, he communicates them to the CEC staff, who have the final say in which and how many films will be presented at the festival.

Usually, the films shortlisted are not ones which are big box office successes, but rather those that have introduced a change in trends or have launched the career of new directorial and acting talents. Once the titles are chosen, the consultant is then responsible for contacting the directors and production companies to negotiate bringing the film to Udine.

How is the Far East Film Festival regarded in Asia?

Bertolin says that over the years, FEFF has built up credibility in Asia and therefore directors are fighting to bring their film to the festival. This is because FEFF is one of the best organized events - all aspects are carefully considered. The audience that the festival attracts is also known to be particularly attentive, numerous and warm, a fact which appeals to the Asian guests.
