In the XVII century, the kingdom of Queen Hijau is conquered by a rebel prince who has made a deal with the evil pirates of Captain Black Raven. Pari, who as a child witnessed the murder of his father by the Black Raven pirates, is brought up by his uncle and introduced to the magical arts by the sage White Ray, who teaches him how to empathetically make contact with the ocean and the creatures which inhabit it. Once he reaches adulthood, Pari will put these magical arts to use to take vengeance on Black Raven and return the kingdom to Queen Hijau.
Nonzee Nimibutr, born in Nonthaburi, in Thailand, in 1961, is a director, producer and screenwriter. Nimibutr began his career by directing music videos, and he made his film debut in 1997 with Dang Bireley’s and Young Gangsters, the adventures of a gang of young criminals. This was followed by Nang Nak (1999, presented at the Far East Film Festival in 2000), then Jan Dara (2001), Three (2002), OK Baytong (2003). His last work was the short The Celino (2005).

A parody of the Japanese daikaiju genre (in technical terms, a film with gigantic monsters) set during an imaginary G8 summit ravaged by Guilala, the monster from outer space. With a focus on environmental issues, the summit, which takes place in the summer of 2008 in Hokkaido, explores the various ineffectual efforts of the major world leaders (including the French President, who is exclusively concerned with matters regarding the fairer sex) to deal with planetary imbalances. The arrival of the monster from outer space sets off a frenzied race to take credit for saving the planet from the extraterrestrial threat, right up to the finale in which the Japanese leader is unveiled as an impostor, an emissary from an evil enemy dictatorship.
Born in Tokyo in 1958, the independent film-maker Minoru Kawasaki rightly deserves the epithet of “the Japanese Ed Wood”, thanks to his style based on demented ideas and his nostalgia for VFX techniques. International success came his way in 2004 with The Calamari Wrestler, followed two years later by The World Sinks Except Japan and then by The Rug Cop.
Due film di mezzanotte saranno presentati in collaborazione con il Far East Film Festival di Udine: Monster X Strikes Back: attack the G8 summit! di Minoru Kawasaki (giovedì 28 agosto - ore 00:00 in Sala Grande) e Queens of Langkasuka di Nonzee Nimibutr (venerdì 5 settembre - ore 00:00 in Sala Grande).
Giovedì 21 agosto il consueto aperitivo estivo delle ore 19.00 con il jazz live al “Lido Visionario” sarà ancora più movimentato del solito, perché avrà come protagonista la “FAR EAST ORCHESTRA”! La serata, già di per sé affascinante, riserva una vera chicca: l’ospite “d’onore” sarà infatti Sandro Gibellini, uno dei più grandi nomi del panorama jazzistico italiano. Per completare l’evento ed evocare ancor meglio le atmosfere orientali verrà proiettato, alle ore 17.00 e alle ore 21.00, il film giapponese “LINDA LINDA LINDA” di Yamashita Nobuhiro.
Ricordiamo che Sandro Gibellini, celebre chitarrista bresciano, ha suonato con Gerry Mulligan, Jimmy Owens, Lee Konitz, Woody Shaw, Kenny Barron, Mel Lewis, Sal Nistico, Steve Grossmann e fu proprio lui che nel 1997 rappresentò l’Italia al “Midem” di Cannes, un meeting tra i migliori chitarristi jazz europei. Un ascolto doveroso per tutti gli amanti della musica dal vivo! Gli otto musicisti, diretti da Nevio Zaninotto, eseguiranno alcune colonne sonore dei film hongkonghesi firmati da Johnnie To, ri-arrangiate per l’occasione in chiave Jazz. Si potranno riascoltare dal vivo le melodie indimenticabili di “The Mission” e “Hero Never Dies” con l’aggiunta, per l’occasione, di un’autentica novità nel repertorio della band: il trascinante ritornello di “Linda Linda Linda”, pezzo portante della colonna sonora del film di Yamashita. Questo brano rock, originariamente del gruppo dei “Blue Hearts” - famosi in Giappone negli anni Ottanta -, è così trascinante che, al termine del concerto dell’Orchestra del Far East, indurrà tutti, anche senza volerlo, a fischiettarne il ritornello: Linda/Linda/Lindaaaaa, Lindaaaaaaa…

Il Circolo Fotografico Friulano strizza l’occhio all’oriente.
Anzi… fa un Click ad Oriente!
E quale occasione migliore della decima edizione del Far East Film Festival?
I fotografi Sandro Boato, Marco Del Linz, Ivano De Simon, Carla Fabris e Antonio Paravano volgono gli sguardi, e gli obiettivi delle proprie macchine fotografiche, verso l’estremo oriente. Le immagini esposte sono delle vere e proprie istantanee sulla vita all’interno della manifestazione cinematografica. Protagonisti, più o meno consapevoli, sono i volti ed i gesti che colorano il FEFF.
La speranza è di riuscire a trasmettere la vitalità che orbita dentro e fuori al teatro Giovanni da Udine per quegli 8 giorni.
Le foto sono state realizzate durante le passate edizioni del FEFF ma ci sarà spazio anche per la decima. Infatti sarà presente una piccola bacheca sulla quale verranno messe, giorno per giorno, nuove immagini dell’edizione in corso.
La mostra verrà inaugurata presso lo ZOO (Circolo ARCI) in Via Fiume 12, alle ore 19:30 del 16 Aprile.

Waiting for the program of this year, we wondered why we don’t place on the blog, day by day, all the schedules of past editions. So then…yes, all right, come on, here you are the program of the BEFEFF - or the BIG EVENT FAR EAST FILM FESTIVAL, aka the TENTH EDITION!
Domani, martedì 8 Aprile, al Bar del Visionario, alle ore 11:30.
E’ ufficiale. Il padre di Ring, Nakata Hideo, aprirà il Festival con il suo ultimo film, L change the worLd, spin-off dei due Death Note (già visti a Udine l’anno scorso e riproiettati quest’anno prima della serata di apertura per rinfrescarsi le meningi sulla battaglia di L e Light Yagami). Ma non è finita qui, perché il 23 aprile, horror day (come poteva mancare al decimo anniversario?), si aprirà nel segno del regista nipponico, con la proiezione di Kaidan, primo film girato in Giappone dopo l’esperienza americana.
